What was I thinking? Pontoon Boat 20 - 24 foot, outboard.

I am thinking about a new boat and motor, and medium price range, but I have learned you get what you want. If you don't like it, and you settle for something less you will not like it.

I am thinking Yahama for an outboard - 4 stroke. :D

thanks

Don't know anything whatsoever about pontoon boats. I do however have several makes and models of outboards. My two Yamaha 4 strokes are extremely quiet, they run like sewing machines and the gas mileage is excellent. I have Merc and Evinrude 2 strokes as well as a Merc 4 stroke to compare to, and the Yamahas wins hands down. Now, I have no idea as to repair part cost as of yet, but so far I haven't had to find out! Dealer support is a major issue with me, the Yamaha is sorely lacking there.

Kev_Alask***

Aloha55,
There are lots of great pontoons on the market but like most things you get what you pay for. I bought a 2002 Smokercraft 8522 Paradise with Merc 50 EFI Bigfoot 4 stroke and its the perfect boat and layout for my family needs.
As Kev rightly says, dealer support is extremely important and mine has gone the extra mile, so I'm a happy boater :D

I bought a Monarch 20 pontoon boat and Mariner 50 4stoke (not big foot)new in 96 and still have it. If you go with a 20' pontoon get large diameter (23")pontoons to help with loads. I can carry 6 people with all the gear very comfortably and make 12-14 mph all day long. It makes 19 mph wide open with one or two aboard (per gps). I slow cruise alone at 4200 rpm at 12 mph. If 3-4 people get up front there is occasional cavatation in 2' chop at full throttle. A Bigfoot version should help take care of this problem. If buying another engine it would be a 2 stoke but the 4 stroke has be reliable and quiet. I currently own 4 other 2 strokes to compare with.

The Monarch is supposed to be somewhat above average in the quality but a few things bug me with it. Galvanized bolts mounting the life time (PT) floor and door hinges is one of them and cheap cleats the other. Otherwise it has been durable. Make sure your motor harness is correctly installed so it doesn't get beat up from waves.

Accessibilty to the engine is something to be aware of. Mine has no rear decks and the engine is under a lounging cushion. I have to lift the hinged center cushion to access the engine. It is hard to change oil and maintain the engine if the boat is hanging from a boat house lift (mine is). I have to pull the boat out on a trailer to adjust the valves and do easy oil changes. Pumping oil through that tiny dipstick hole is a royal pain and takes forever.

If you plan to trailer a pontoon boat far beware...I have big motor American V8 automobiles (Towncar 5.0L & Grand Marquis LS 4.8L) and they have a tough time on the hi-way at 70mph. Windage is is huge and it hits a "drag wall" around 60 mph. For comparision I had a bigger and heavier 20' Proline cuddy cabin boat with 140 engine that towed like it was a canoe behind previous towncars. Now I know why you don't see more pontoon boats being trailered.

Hi,
If you want a 4-stroke for the pontoon boat you may want to have a closer look at the Yamaha 4-stroke "High thrust" series:

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/product...=2003&cat=Four+Stroke+Series&scat=High+Thrust

Yamaha say for example about T60: "Dual Thrust propeller makes it an ideal solution for T60 pontoon applications."

/Bo

Sloopy, your probably the last one to critize someones spelling, nuf said!

Aloha55, In the medium priced, best performing I would suggest either a Star Craft or a Tracker. We had a Tracker with too small a motor but the boat was great. A friend has a Star Craft with an old 90hp Mercury and it seems to be a good outfit. " Poor Boy's have poor ways".

I would suggest the Tracker with any good fourstroke, that comes with the magic word, SERVICE.

Happy Boating and Sloopy keep your dictionary handy. Re: Consumer Report - Best Engine ? Best Pantoon Boat?

Aloha55,
A little more details on my experience.
2002 was the first year for the Smokercraft 8522 Paradise and I found a number a niggling little problems, more quality of workmanship than quality of material and design.
I also had one big problem with the port pontoon that was taking on water and with a full load of family and friends the boat tried to imitate the Titanic. Very scary.

My dealer "Upper Canada Marine" has gone the extra mile and serviced me 110%. When I was finished with the boat for the season, he picked it up and is shipping it back to Smokercraft for them to look at the problems, fix and make whatever upgrades they have for 2003. They will store the boat and then deliver back in the spring at not charge to me. Both he and Smokercraft have been very apologetic and want me to be a satisfied customer.

The things I like about the boat:
1. The layout with three sun loungers and a sun deck.
2. High quality materials throughout.
3. Great dash and gauge package.
4. Built in ladder at the rear.
5. Lot's of well thought out storage, coolers.
6. No wood in the seats.
7. Aluminium skin underneath, life time guarantee on floor and pontoons.

Things that could be improved:
1. Not great access to the motor.
2. The behind dash wiring is a "rats nest"
3. Even with the bigfoot there are times the motor cavities, however, this may have something to do with the water in the pontoon.
4. The Bimimi top brackets are strong but roughly finished. I have seen boats with plastic hinges and brackets that will break after prolonged exposure to the sun. My boat especially the rail top brackets are made from aluminium "U" channel which are strong but look like they were made by the apprentice as the edges are roughly ground and in places sharp.

The servicing of the 4 strokes on pontoons can be a problem especially if you don't have a trailer. I found that I could back the boat up to my EZ floating dock to check the oil and valves. To change the oil I tilt the motor up and the lower unit slides on top of my dock. I then put a container under the drain plug to drain the oil.
BillP, The new Merc's have a large 1" oil fill plug so you don't have to put it in the dip stick.

I find the gear shift on my motor is very stiff even after 70 + hours compared to my 2 stroke. The dealer said that the larger motors have a "shift interupt" switch which helps, but you some times have to realy yank on the control to get it out of gear.
Peter

Re: Consumer Report - Best Engine ? Best Pantoon Boat?

Another thing to look for is if they use plastic or ply backing on seats. They usually don't use pt ply on the seating frames and regular ply can rot. If the boat will not be covered it is something to consider. Only problem is the plastic material type seatiang is about 1.5x the cost.

Lost Canadian...my Mariner has that large opening to add oil but I can't get a tube down it to pump the oil out. The dip stick hole is my only choice for pumping. My dock is too high (not a floating one) to get the engine over for draining. It is possible to change oil while standing in the water but I don't like to do it that way.
If I buy another pontoon boat it will have a rear deck to access the motor...expecially if it is a
4 stroke.

Thanks,
Bill
