Control box jamming

I was given a 1977 Johnson 70 hp and 75 Ranger bass boat.The 3 tooth shifter was broken .I replaced.Works fine till I give it gas in reverse then tooth appears to snag on cam.It does look like I need new shifting cables.Can anyone give advice please?

Have you put it back together properly?
l am working on the same remote atm and that has been my problem with it.
There is also a couple of youtube videos of that model remote.
