Control Box Knob

1990 Johnson GT 100 . There is a knob on the control box right below where the key goes. The knob turns left and right. I have no idea what this knob does. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Increases or decreases friction on the shift lever.

This may seem like a stupid question, but why would you want to be able to adjust the friction? Can someone give me an example needing to do this? Thanks

I would think it would be so that if you are driving down the lake, you dont have to hold the shifter and you wont lose speed.
