God i love boats. lol, wouldnt give it up for anything.. that being said..

I'm having a issue with my shifting.. i have a 1995 mercury force 120 and im having problems shifting gears.. the motor seems to be running fine, however after have the throttle foward while throttling down, the boat skips nuetral and goes right into reverse then i have to push foward to lock back into neutral..
i fear in going to strip my lower unit gearing if this continues. i already seem to have a bit of a grinding noise when i shift (just happened very recently so have not run since).
the throttle cables seem to be working just fine inside the cowl. is it possible that there is an adjustment that needs to be made at the control box (if even possible) or is a new one required?
Also, could it be too late and my clutch already toasted? it still shifts and prop spins, but this was a off the water test.
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appretiated. Thanks for reading.
