I have a 1985 Galaxy I/O with a Chevy 350 and an OMC 800 outdrive. The next item on my list to fix is the throttle/forward/reverse control lever. It's loose and pretty tricky to get to work right and I want to get it back to working well so anyone can operate my boat.

The labels are long gone so I don't know who makes it. Can someone help ID this for me? I am hoping there is some type of repair kit or schematic for the lever assembly - I think a previous owner may have taken it apart and not put everything back together just right.

Pics are here:

Thanks!

It looks like an OMC concealed side mount control to me.

That handle looks exactly like mine on my 1993 Four Winns powered by OMC (minus the wood backing). If I remember correctly the engine manual covers the breakdown and rebuild of it. At least it does on the 1992 manual (I bought it on accident).

I need to break mine down also because it's giving a decent amount of resistance and my cables are fine as far as I can tell.

Just buy a new teleflex, and problem solved, except for lower cable adjustment.

Hi all, new here and having the same problem.. I have the same control on a 1997 Sunbird Spirit 170, and have to replace both cables. Same question how do you removed the lever from the inner bracket (Control box). Thanks in advance.

Same as '99 FourWinns Volvo I/O.

To remove the handle, remove the center throttle release disk and put the control in full-throttle reverse. An 1/8" Allen set screw is then exposed directly opposite the handle position. Loosen it and coax the shift handle off the spline. Three screw heads will be exposed. Remove them and the control can be removed from behind the mounting panel.

A small snap-in plate covers four screws to further completely remove the control.

I had he same problem with the shifter cable on my 2000 Horizon 190 - couldn't shift when the outdrive was trimmed up. Your instructions were a great help to get the control out. Thanks!!

Did know the other end of the cable went through a tube to get through the transom. Would have saved me the trouble of removing the exhaust before I realized it. But I just pulled it through and it came out fine.

So now that I have it out for replacement, are there aftermarket cables that would be better than the OEM one to replace it with?
