Control removal ?

OK, my dad bought this boat for a great deal. I used the forum to adjust the shift cable. The lower cable is now set, my problem is that I have play in the control end of things. I can play with it and get it to stay running while shifting, but after a few times it needs to be readjusted. When the lower cable is disconnected, I get almost 1/2" of play on the cable going to the control box. Here's the problem, I can't figure out how to get the box off the side of the boat so I can put a new cable in! I took a pic in hopes of one of you guys knowing. And yes, I did search, and my manual doesn't show how to rmove or any mounting bolts or studs. Any help would be great.

Re: Control removal ?

First you have to pull out the "throttle only" button. It is the one with the red lined Mercruiser label around it. It just pulls out. Use a small screwdriver if you have to.

Once the button is out you will see a goofy bolt that has the hole down the middle for the button you just removed. If I remember right the hex is 5/8". Remove this bolt.

Now you can slide the throttle handle off of its shaft. Either hidden by the handle, or under the trim piece is the mounting screws that hold the whole thing together. Remove them and the throttle controls will be free.

Oh yeah. You have to be able to get to the actual controls on the back side of the panel that it is mounted to. May have to remove a trim panel from the boat or something to accomplish that.
