New member here. Checking to see if anyone can help me. The boat is a 1988 Starcraft medalist 1601. It has a mercruiser 3.7l 4cyl with the 2barrel mercarb. Alpha one drive. As far as the throttle control which I think is giving me problems looks like it has the teleflex logo on it. Its a side mount and has the up/down trim switch on it. No other control buttons other then that. So I bought the boat last year for $500. When i put it on the water it would only drive in forward. No neutral and no reverse. I put a new lower shift cable on it hopeing that was the problem. I adjusted it with the specs I had. 6" from center of barrel to center of mounting hole etc... The problem I have now is that the control is really stiff. It goes into forward fine. In neutral the prop is still locked in forward, and in reverse it stays lock in forward. I can see the lower shift cable move but it doesn't push out far enough to engage reverse untill the control is all the way back in reverse. Also the throttle does not move while pulling the control in reverse. Also the lower shift cable barely moves the neutral **** disconnect. Not enough to engage it. Anyone have any idea?

Having the same problem. Have forward, no neutral or reverse. Could it be the shift control cable on gunnel that's bad?
Chevyk10, hope we get some fast answer that applies to both of us. Alpha 1 outdrive.

Chevy I think the lower control cable to the od is the problem. There is a way to trouble shoot the problem. SEI Marine has a few videos on Utube to narrow down the problem. It's very informative and a great help diagnosing the issue. Let me know if that helps.

Check the lower shift cable routing, also take the shift plate apart, clean and lube the pivots, etc. Also, sometimes you need to double or triple check you are in full forward gear before doing your 6" measurement. Sometimes there's still 1/4" left so push the cable pretty good. Lock the prop.
