Im getting all my stuff ready for the winter work im doing on the boat. My mom and dad are nice enough to let me use their garauge to work on my boat over the winter. I got new cables but i think they are too long. How do i measure for them corectly? I dont know how to measure for this. Im thinking about taking the top off my boat and making it a center console. I want to pull the floor up and see whats in there. This hull handels chop so well i dont want to get rid of it so i want to make it the way i would get a new one. If you know what i mean. But thats another post.

Re: Controll cable length??

teleflex.com has a good faq for the cable length. if you take the cap off that boat it will become extremely flimsy. no side strength. you could cut out the bow and rework that area. the side strength in that boat is the wide gunnels.

this is a boat that was a center console, that is stripped and redid. notice the wide gunnel.

Drew, if you look at Center Console boats, they have a cap on top of the hull mold that gives them the lateral strength you need. You could cut away the top mold leaving a 4-5" piece of the deck intact. Now pack the space under the gunwale with foam and lay cloth over the foam, and run it to the floor. You will then have an open bow boat. No, you will need to modify this design to maintain the lateral stength needed. For example , you may need to put wood under the gunwales to add the necessary stiffness if the fiberglass top doesn't have it.

All in all you will be designing a new hull, should you decide to go down that path.

Re: Controll cable length??

you'd probably want to consult an engineer for such a change. although an open bow seems pretty simple, that's a significant modification. would probably be easier/quicker/safer to sell and get cc.

what if you start chopping and it doesn't work?
