Take the lower unit back off and make sure that the control box is in gear (Forward) and that the lower uit is also (Shift the lower unit into neutral and then back into gear adn then re-install the lower unit. Should work just fine (Providing that it worked prior to changing the water pump impeller).

Let us know how it goes.

Craig

Try moving in and out of gear using just the shift rod attached to the lower unit (assuming the unit is off). Move the prop a little by hand while lifting up or pushing down on the rod to go to forward/reverse. It should engage easily.

If the lower unit is OK, look for binding on the powerhead end of the shift mechanism. I can't tell from your post if you have cables attached, but if so it could easily be the cable that is binding either at the motor or the control box.

I HAVE THE CONTROLS OFF AND THEY
ARE THE SAME AS BEFORE THE
LOWER UNIT IS OFF WHICH WAS THE
FIRST THING I DID.
I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY IF SOMEONE
COULD TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH
THE CONTROL BOX TO FIX IT.
I THINK SOMETHING JUST BROKE OR
SOMETHING HAPPEN AND THIS IS A
OF THE STRANGE JUST THING TO HAPPEN TO ME
THANK YOU
REX A. My Merc 500 had a problem shifting about 15 years ago, I seem to recall a little ball and an aluminum plate in the control box, the little ball got out of the track and was mashing itself into the aluminum plate. Don't know if this could be what your dealing with but thought I would toss in my .02

--rml

Re: CONTROLS 1967 65 H.P. MERC.

i am ha ving the samke issue on a merc 500 67 i replce impellar and wen to go put lower unit on and it would not shift. I followed the instructions inn manual to try to get both upper and lower unit alligned. The controls work fine when lower unit is off. so i have fiddled with this trying to find where the power head is forward and getting the shift cam in right position. It worked fine before but is almost like it is binding when the two are together. So if anyone has any tips or insioght on lining these two things up ( other tha n trial and error) that would be great as well as some ideas on why it my be binding
