Controls Question - Will it work?

OK - Here's the plan. On Saturday I bought a great 1981 Merc 50 that came with the controls. I have two boats. 1 pea green tri haul with a Junk 70hp Johnson(Gift from inlaws) and a 16' Sea Nymph FM with a remote 1989 Merc 9.9. The controls look nearly identical, except for the battery wire ends that go into the motor. Can I leave the 1989 controls on and swap out the motors when I head to big water and put the correct controls on older tri-haul. I am thimking of just puttig a waterproof "quik-sisconnect" on the battery terminal wires at the motor, The plug connector looks the same. The Sea nymph has all gauges. Have a look at the pin pattern. If they match (they probably will), then it's a go. If there's a trim gauge, it won't read right. Tach may need to be adjusted. Is the Fishing Machine rated for a fifty?
