controls question

what is the trick to get the ball bearing and spring situated on my 1973 johnson controls?the spring is tough!!!!theres got to be a way.any help much appreciated.
btw,had to replace bent shift lever thats why its apart

Once you get the shift and throttle plate in, put the cup and bearing in and slide the spring in behind it. I take a screwdriver and put it close to the end of the spring in one of the spring windings and that helps compress the spring into the slot. Other times I've used a screw driver like a shoe horn to help slide the spring in. Once the spring is in, put the cover on. These springs will disappear from the face of the earth if they pop out.
