Kfa - yah ....I set the outboard on and the cave plate is now level with boat bottom....at 20" transom it was 2" below...so I raised it the 2".
Gt- yup ....it's starting to take shape now....might even be able to paint some under deck areas soon!

This evening I started to glue in the cap build out....3/8" ply !

The transom looks just like an SUV17, or Cayenne. I love the way Ankona build a nice simple, clean transom with a built in rise so you usually don't need a jackplate and all that jazz which ultimately saves weight. Is the rear deck going to be flush with the top of the gunnels and reach forward to where the cap extenders end in the pic? Almost time to start thinking about primer and top coats. Have you decided on a paint scheme?

Yes, rear deck will be flush with cap but will only extend to the seat back....the end of the cap in pic still gets extended back about 12" to the seat back. Color will be a very light pastel SeaFoam color for all with some splatter in dark green for floors and hull sides.

Re: Convert 14' runabout into fishing boat for the SW FL flats

Sweet, I love seafoam green, or any unique color on a boat for that matter. My Stratocaster is a really cool Fender "Seafoam Green" too. I'm gonna get a boat painted to match it one day when I'm rich and famous. Although, all the "cool kids" down here in the skiff world seem to be going with "balckout packages" in which every bit of hardware on the boat, as well as the hull, trailer and wheels are all powerdercoated black. They say the fish apparently can't see the hull as easily (yeah right) and it doesn't get hot, but I'm not so sure, but I'm sure it makes them look super tough and cool and whatnot. Of course, once you and all your buddies get the same paint job it's not exactly cool, or unique anymore. Plus, it just seems kind of unboaty looking and boring to me. It seems like it would be hard to resell and/or spot at sea should you ever need to be found by others too. Oh well, no accounting for taste. Keep us posted on the progress. She' coming right along.....

Yah, not a fan of black boats....or any super dark color.....I find it hard to believe they think it doesn't get hot! Dark colors absorb more sun....has less reflection....and finish breaks down much faster.....black is what they use in a solar collector! .....much rather walk over a white deck in my bare feet than a black one! :)

Got all the gusset supports for the cap sides fabricated and epoxied in! .....glad that's done.....a lot of little fussy pieces to work with....each one was a custom fit! Also got the side panels fabricated to install once the gussets are cured some and add some fillets tomorrow!

chipping away at it.... How far apart are the gunnel supports, about 12"? ARe you going to run electrical/controls through the hole in them? Can't wait to see her with the cap complete.

Re: Convert 14' runabout into fishing boat for the SW FL flats

Kfa....they are about 13.5" oc typically....a little more space near bow. Yes, I provided the holes for a way to run wiring and cables, etc. between bow and stern. I'm also going to glass in a 1 1/4" PVC pipe between the two cockpit facing bulkheads for live and bait wells plumbing to stern.....they will fit perfectly on the little shelf formed by the hull along each side.....and this will also stiffen the hull sides which still have a lot of flex.

I plan to put some PVC tubes in thru the bulkheads to store rods .....and then add a vertical rod holder in the center of each hull side to catch the mid span of each rod. That will also stiffen the thin hull sides too.

I still have a little work in the bow before I place the sides on the cap....but hopefully in next couple days.

Pm....thanks for the compliment.....the best thing about epoxy is it fills in the gaps! .....she probably won't be the best polished finish....but it should be a good fishin boat!

sounds awesome. do you have to do anything special to the PVC to get the fiberglass to stick to it, or does it bond ok as is?

Re: Convert 14' runabout into fishing boat for the SW FL flats

I haven't tested it yet....but I thought I would just scuff it up with 80 grit, clean it off with acetone and stick some epoxy to it....I'll do a test tomorrow for sure. The install would be set in thicken bed of epoxy with some chopped strand mixed in....fillet it smooth/ flush to curved pipe...then glass it in to the hull for a smooth transition and cover. I didn't run any pipe in the floor because it was so shallow and I wanted all foam fill.....plus I wanted floor sealed with nothing in there to become a future problem.

I'm planning to divide my large live well into 2 separate sections....one for bait and one for the catch.....which will also leave me some room for a seat base centered between the 2 hatches. The pipe will let me run each well with a supply tube from a pump at each side of transom. All wiring will be up in gunnels to stay dry.

Got my new Teleflex steering wheel today....so I should also start the build out of the side helm station !

Re: Convert 14' runabout into fishing boat for the SW FL flats

Sounds like a plan. I bet the PVC will stick in the PB pretty well. I see lots of other boat builder use essentially the same technique, so it must work. Amazing what can be done with PVC and epoxy. Almost all of my accessories (tiller extender, grab bar, rod holders, trailer guide ons, etc...) are DIY, PVC items and they all work great. I'll replace them all with stainless or aluminum one day when I'm rich and famous, but so far so good. Plus, I get lots of funny looks on the water which is always nice.

Hey Fc, fabrication and installation work are looking pro!

Technically speaking...PVC is similar to Starboard, nothing really sticks to it...except of course to itself when you use the PVC cement...
By roughing up the surface you will get a fair mechanical bond and if no load is applied to it, will hold up just fine...
I did something similar when I installed some limber hole liners in my stringers and drain liners in my cross brace...except I am using poly resin instead of epoxy...The epoxy should give you an even stronger bond than the poly, so you should be golden...:)

Re: Convert 14' runabout into fishing boat for the SW FL flats

Got the cap rail sides 90% in, started the console build in, and glassed the PVC conduits in along the hull, and did some trailer work (replaced deteriorated side rollers with new bunks, new wheel hubs k bearings, tires, added a tongue jack, paint axel/underside & tongue)! Trying to finish all major builds in next 2 weeks so it's ready to take south for winter where I will do all finish deck work, finish glass & paint........temps are headed down to 50's so for most of the epoxy work it's getting too cold.....time to get out of the North! :)

Cool. I love the little helm. Is there a bench seat in front of it? I love the little glove compartment looking thingy too.
