I have installed a Mikuni using a pulse line installed on a side cover and it worked fine .

The portable fuel tank has to be vented. Might try operating with the cover loosened or removed. Also -- sometimes helps to raise the tank up to the level of the powerhead or a little above.

I have ordered the cheap Chinese pumps twice (3 per order). First order, 2 worked fine and one did not pump. Second order, 1 good, one leaked, one no pump. You likely got a bad one. I found a salvage source for used OEM pumps for $25 each and 100% good so far.

Some folks are just not aware how simple some older motors are.----Very little plastic.----Easy to maintain and easy to find / make the parts.

Thanks for the response. I like the sound of the used OEM pumps as I like to to keep things original but I have decided to try a genuine Mikuni, not a Chinese copy. The stockist here says there is a months wait for the metal ones. He only has plastic ones at the moment.
kbait, do you have a contact for the used ones if the Mikuni doesn't work out?
I will report back in a months time.

Regards

Update. I got the Mikuni pump ( had to get the round plastic one as they did not know when they could get the rectangle metal pump. Plastic pump is sealed and unserviceable).
There is not much spare space in these little motors so I took out the internal tank to make space and made a bracket to bolt the pump to it and the bracket bolts up to the threads where the old tank was bolted to.
It works great in the bucket and I am waiting (for the last couple of months)to take it down to the local river to give it a good run for a couple of hours to really test it. Unfortunately we have had so much rain that I am unable to get my boat out of the back yard as the ground is too boggy.
Anyway I am sure that it will be fine.
One positive of taking out the internal tank is that it gives easy access to the bottom spark plug.
Have attached some pic's.
Thanks to everyone for the help and advice.
