I've heard several people say that the only difference between the two is the carb and if you put a carb from the 50 on the 40hp it will now produce 50hp. This sounds too easy, even if the basic block is the same i would think there would be differences in porting and possibly a different head... Anyone have experience/knowledge in this area?

Thanks

I know that was indeed the case for early 90's 40-50 hp.
All other parts were identical.
The 50 also ran 500 rpm faster, I think.

Most engine required several other (expensive) changes.

Go to mercruiserparts.com
pull up the parts lists and compare them.

Re: convert a 98' 40hp to a 50hp???

According to mercruiserparts.com the only difference is indeed just the carbs... I don't know what the price difference was when these motors were new but I'm sure it was more than the $120 that a 50hp carb costs. Why wouldnt everyone who wanted a 50 just buy a 40 and the bigger carb??

Anyway, has anyone actually done this? I am curious how noticeable the difference is and also how much more fuel will I consume with the bigger carb?

thanks!
