bought a long shaft lower gear on ebay and am ready to install it on my 1981 short shaft 15 HP evrinrude. have not done this before so need lots of help. Mostly wondering if i need more parts to complete the installation. the only things in the long shaft showing are the gear shaft and the shift rod. have read some about needing a water tube extension...this may have one. I cannot tell.

Enclosed are some pics of the short shaft on my Glasply and the top of the lower gear case i bought. Do i need a gasket to button the lower unit to my short shaft outboard.

Appreciate any thoughts.

I've never worked on a long shaft so I can't help too much. Check out the parts list over at BRP. I assume alll you will have to do is remove the extention and replace the driveshaft and water pump assembly. You may have shiftshaft issues to deal with too, but you'll have to check the parts list.

Have a look here and you will be able to see exactly what parts you will need for the extension. I would think you'll need a longer water tube but I don't remember seeing an extension for it. You may need to extend the one you have by the 5 or 10 inch longer extension. I would suggest you pull the power head (expose the water tube) and cut it and solder in the extension distance in the middle so that you still have the end with the proper bend to align with the water pump. Obviously I've never done this before but I'm sure you figure things out. One thing you might also consider is pulling the extension off and putting the leg on your motor and test drive it just so you know the gear case is in good working order. Best of luck. Rick.

I think that's what he's attempting to do.

Re: converting 1981 15HP fm short to long shaft

wbeaton: After a second read you might be right but his title says, "converting 1981 15HP fm short to long shaft" so I'm thinking he want's a long shaft at the end of this project. I'm just suggesting he test drive the gear case before doing the "long shaft" conversion to his motor. If there is a problem he will know it isn't because of the conversion. I hope I'm getting the right slant on this but it wouldn't be the first time I turned up the wrong road. Rick.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought he just wanted to remove the extension and use it on his shortshaft. Maybe we both need clarification.
