Converting a 4-wire tilt motor setup to a 3-wire motor setup

Hi All, I have a Penta 270 sterndrive unit, but the 4-wire tilt motor has stopped working. I have done all the checks, taken the motor apart and cleaned it but still will not turn in either direction, even connected directly to a 12v source. I have the opportunity of getting a 3-wire tilt motor at a good price and my question is can the current system be changed/modified to work with the 3-wire motor?

Or is a 2-wire conversion possible also/instead?
