Converting a long shaft to a short??

I have an early 90's mercury 15 hp 2stroke (longshaft) and am currently using it on a small john boat. While the boat itself has no problem accepting a longer motor, the lake I use it on does. I don't want to replace the motor, and I am unsure about how much I could build up the transom as it has seen numerous repairs. This leaves me with the option of conversion. Anyone have any hints, directions or links to guide me through this????

Personally, I would either look for an inexpensive short shaft lower unit(E-Bay, Ect.) or trade it for a short shaft motor. I believe those motors were one piece lower unit housings. That's all I can offer. Maybe someone on here is looking for a long shaft, that might be willing to trade you lower units.

NV02 - Why convert if the performance is OK? I run a 9.9 long shaft on a 13' open alumnium boat. Runs fine. Might run a tad better if I converted but not worth the bother or the bucks to me.

How about a small jackplate? Cheap, easy to install and easily removed later if needed. No major changes to the boat or motor.

Good luck!
