Re: Converting inboard to a outboard

Thanks Jim for the great reply I think you are right the outboard transom gets its strenth from all 3
1. The inside Keel bracket
2. A solid 1.5" plywood transom
3. and the splashwell
I think some posts above think i am going to use a outside bracket to hang the outboard on thats not my intent..
I also agree that fabing the inside bracket will take some thougth we will see
I see from your post you own a Jupiter is it the same as the 6 part youtube posting if so GREAT looking boat..
THANKS Bill

Re: Converting inboard to a outboard

Go for it.
2 things to think about.
-The hole that drains the bilge (sp) is in the center on an I/O and on most O/B it's offset to the side.
Your custom knee brace will need to incorporate that issue.
You could do 2 knee braces or come up with one super strong one.
- A lot of O/B factory transom wood were made in 3 parts so not much strength there
Did a transom rebuild on a friends O/B 18 ft holiday and the splash well was cracked because the transom wood was mush.
So it would seem to me that the splash well does account for the structure and takes most of the force.

I have been considering the same route as you on my boat.
My problem is my motor still works and I have another boat that I seem to be using a lot more these days.
