not sure what forum this should be in in...please move it if i am in the wrong one, thanks

I have a 25hp 1984-85 merc on a 14 ft arrowglass that i just began restoring

currently, it is the normal stick/tiller (not sure what correct term is) throttle and steering where i have to sit back by the motor and steer.

because i am completely restoring boat (deck, transom, and stringers) i am thinking of making this a center or side consol with a steering wheel and normal throttle controls.

my question:
is this possible? easy/hard? expensive? do i need a kit?

thanks so much

Re: converting stick steering to controls?

Depends on your model and serial number, the easy way out would be to find a doner engine. Some attaching kits are in the $200 range although most are around $100 and you will still need a shiftbox and cables. An electric start is still more, it's not impossablr but much cheaper with a donor engine.

It's alway nice to find a doner thats exactly the same for other parts interchangeability but if you could find a 18-20 or 25XD with controls it would great. You might try local marinas, ebay or some of the salvage yards on the internet.
