I have a 1998 SX Cobra and was told that i could use any DP-SM lower on my upper to make my single prop a duo prop. Does this sound right?

Yes, you can replace the lower unit to convert to DP, but you can't use just "Any" lower unit. You need one with the proper gear ratio for your engine.

I found a duo prop today and the seller says it is a DP-SM. It has a 1.95 ratio. The upper looks just like mine. I asked what year his was and he said it's a 2007. Evan that many years apart his DP-SM lower will fit my 1998 upper?

2007 was the first year of the DPS-A, and exactly why year of the boat is worthless as to what the year of the engine and drive is.
If the drive is a DP-SM, then it's not 2007, probably 2006 but yes it will fit your "98" drive. The 1.95 gear ratio is for a small block Chevy V8, what engine you actually have, I have no clue.

I better have him double check as it's a bit of a road drive to go get it. I am building a 383 so thats what the duo prop will be behind. Does the DP-SA look destinctly different than a DP-SM? I'm pretty sure he said his duo prop came off a 2007 Stingray.

Never mind Don. I see the DP SA does look different so more than likely his is what he says it is. I guess being there are no props with it that i need to figure out what props i'll need. Thanks for your help.

Like I said, 2007 doesn't mean anything but the year of the boat, not engine and drive. Get the model and serial number of the outdrive from him, or maybe a picture.

Understood. I do have a picture of it and his upper looks just like mine.5Ld5N75K53K53M23L2c3ae63c448373261fdc.jpg

Thank you Don. He priced haveing it fixed and bought a new one instead. He said a clip came loose and let the verticle shaft pop up. He was quoted $500 for new verticle shaft, bearing and top cover. They told him the lower was OK. I'm crossing my fingers. My upper is good but i may spend for the parts on the one i'm getting from him and leave my outdrive a lone. Do you have to have specialized tools to work on one of these uppers?
