cooked the upper unit on my OMC cobra

My question is if the upper units were only made for a few years will it be hard to find a used one? I would presume that my lower unit is in good shape and usable. Unfortunately I bought the boat 3 weeks ago and with the assistance of a not so educated mechanic we screwed up and did not add enough oil into the unit. Basically filled it throught the lower hole with one quart then ran it for 10 minutes and locked up (turns tight when starting the engine) the top half of the unit. The boat is a 92 corsair sunbird 185/4.3 and we only paid 4500 for it in excellent condition. It sucks to think that we may have to spend 3500 to fix it. Any suggestions? rebuild? used? Thanks in advance. BTW Phil, I appreciate you setting me in the right direction. Thanks man!! Rob

Rob
They started making them I believe in 87.Mine is a 91 with 4.3 HO.I have learned nearly everthing about the engine and drive from this forum.Do a search on it.Also you need to get a manual on it.In the Oklahoma City area I haven't found a mechanic yet that I really would take my omc cobra to.Most are good merc mechanics but they are really not sure on cobras (my own opinion).I have noticed some cobra drives on ebay.I have bought a lot of new omc parts there also. There is a boat salvage in Tulsa and one in Grove that I know of.Believe it or not Napa can get a lot of parts for OMC.Sorry to here that the gears were actually gone. Also the Cobra drive is really easy to pull(there are u-joints in it that need to grease).
Might also try the site,sterndrive.com.

There is a screw on top of drive, head about 1/2 inch round, that takes a stright edge screw driver. That is the dip stick for the drive,if you want to call it that. Also it bleeds air when you fill the unit with oil.Mine was very hard to get loose when I got my boat. Finally there is a screw on port side mid way up that you do not want to undo for any reason,as there are no threads there and the retainer will fall down in drive.

All the parts for Cobras are still available, as is service from Johnson/Evinrude dealers (at least in my area).

I have also bought parts from www.dougrussell.com and been very satisfied with the fast delivery.
