Re: Cooking onboard

once again this forum is the best and because what i have heard the alcohol stove is out. We have small children and the clear flame makes us nervous. I looked at your setup rbh and that looks like a winner :) I do appreciate all your help!!!!

Bottom line, no fuel-fired stove should be left unattended. Propane and Butane are heavier than air- if the flame goes out there's the possibility of fumes sinking to the bilge, creating an explosion hazard. Heck, there's a risk in just carrying the cylinders aboard. Boats that are specially equipped for LPG carry bulk cylinders in vapor-proof lockers, with automatic solenoids and safety shutoffs, alarms, etc. Those of us using portable 'camping stoves' aren't following the marine safety guidelines, but we do it anyway.

My alcohol stove flame isn't 'clear', it's blue. The good thing about an alcohol flame is that it's easily extinguished with water, but you have to be around to spot anything going wrong.

They all produce flame from a combustible liquid or gas, so they're all 'risky' to some extent when used on a boat. HOWEVER, people cook successfully with all of them and suffer very few accidents. Keep your head out of your butt and don't turn your back on them- you'll be fine.

Re: Cooking onboard

Basically all the good advice is contained above. We used the alcohol stove on our first Carver a LOT, worked great for whatever we wanted to cook (pressurized tank style) but the Bayliner stove had a leak, lit it up once and had a few minutes of excitement, nothing damaged but our pride- turned out to be an o-ring. We rarely used the alcohol after that, and the 'new' Carver has an LPG stove setup in it that works great- will be much happier with that. FWIW, LPG stoves can be found in great condition used and in a form factor that'll drop into the boat. The tank storage is the biggest cost, but worthwhile if you use it alot I think, but be aware of what's going on no matter what you use! Live to boat another day!
