Haven’t read into the cool fuel too much...only read a few threads about disasters and vapour lock. Usually with regards to the engine I have in MPI form. I have one of the early generation mpi in 2003, but I don’t have cool fuel or any problems with vapour lock. Perhaps it’s a hot climate problem !

The next gen of cool fuel from yours is where the paint issue came from

The vapor lock issue does happen with your model (has happened to mine) and is caused in hot weather. There is a fix but if your not having issues might not need to change

so is it cooled with coolant or raw water? With the motor out, trying to determine what I need to service from raw water exposure....or is it cooled with anything? Looks like it gets raw water but I'm getting pretty confused with all the friggin hoses on this motor! I'm going to become a hose sales person for merc.

The fuel is cooled by using raw water being pushed thru a brass tube which contains smaller tube carrying fuel. Your fuel module looks like the one below, even though it is for a TBI

Water flows thru the area (g) pump is (d), and there is a short loop of tube inside (g) before it goes thru (i)

So does this mean I have something else to service from raw water corrosion? I saw a water line going to the power steering and then down to the cool fuel and then kind of lost it from there! There are some hoses on this motor...and getting to them in the boat, will what were they thinking???

I'm getting a bit mixed up do to all the different threads your posting in regard to different items. But the power steering and cool fuel units are raw water cooled. Do seems to remember you have a full closed cooling system and also have a thread about the exhaust elbows. The elbows are also raw water

Yep, that is all correct....but in previous thread talking about the closed cooling systems, the discussion was the water comes in, it cools the heat exchanger and then goes out the elbow- when I was looking at the line from the pump I see it goes into the steering cooler ( why the heck do you need to cool the steering?) and then I see the cool fuel- so, is that something similar to the elbow has to be replaced as a maintenance items like the elbow?

Without a PS cooler the oil will get way to hot and boil out.
I fresh water the cooler usually last the life of the motor, in salt not so much. With all the rest your doing, remove the cooler and have a look at it
