Its tragic when a person becomes a victim of some stupid twit like this. There is no tragedy in regard to this driver - just stupidity
I have no sympathy whatsoever for him. He closed a highway for 6 hours, got a $20,000 ride in a helicopter to the hospital and will probably run up about a $100,000, or more, in hospital bills. Someone has to pay for all of that. Whether that someone is an insurance company, his parents or the medicaid system (hospital reimbursement), it is a huge waste of resources.
Further, these types of accident usually don't result in a single car accident. What usually happens, is that the speeder crosses the entire median and then hits one or more oncoming cars. The results are devastating. I saw such an accident about ten years ago, on I10 in Metairie, LA. A guy crashed a Corvette at 5am and hit a guy and his wife, nearly killing both of them. The passenger in the Vette, who was a chick punk singer of minor fame, was killed. I just happened to roll up on the scene, immediately after the cars came to rest. The back end of the Vette was completely gone and the drunk driver of it, kept looking out the open back end at me. He was alternately looking at his dead passenger and then at me. I'll never forget the look on his face, as he realized that he had just killed her.
This is the reality of this sort of behavior. It isn't cool.
