Cooling a Force 40 HP

Bought a boat - don't know much, but learning. Taking it out on the 16th for the first time where I can use the 40 HP Mercury Force (1995). I heard that motor has had some problems????

Question: Read here that this particular motor only "spits" some water rather than a stream out of the motor. Is this true? How can I tell if I'm getting adequate cooling? Is there a built in safeguard if the motor starts to overheat?

I have a Johnson 9.9 as a kicker/troller which spews forth a remarkable stream of water - is the 40 HP Force supposed to do the same or not? It only spit a little when running with ears.

Thanks for all help and other insight on this motor I should know.

I would start off by putting a new water pump in it, that way you know your starting off good there.

Agree on putting the waterpump in. The force only has exhaust relief holes, which will spew a combination of exhaust and water. Force Motors have no dedicated telltale output.

If you are running on muffs, you can check the temp by putting your hand (gently so you don't get burned) on the block while running. If you cannot keep your hand there for a few seconds then you may be running hot. You should also have the spray coming out the back.

If I am not mistaken (its been a while since I owned my Force) there is a heat sensor that cuts out the engine if it gets too hot. Although i don't think I would want to trust this will cut before you overheat and do damage. The best thing you can do is to inspect and replace the impeller to be sure.

Hello. New to the forum here. I stumbled upon this place after Googling the Force 40. I'm curious, is there information here or online as to how to replace the waterpump / impeller ? Thanks !

BTW, nice place !
