I am having trouble getting water to the motor when I flush it on the trailer. I got the Volvo earmuffs, changed the impeller, changed the hose, but I cant get water to pump out of the raw water pump. Its a Jabsco pumping to a Volvo/Chevy 350 1978.

I thought that maybe it wasnt sealing well enough, so I submerged to outdrive in a barrel....still no water.

I must be missing something.
All help appreciated.

its sucking air from somewhere. there is hose connection between the outdrive. Alot of times this nipple will get really corroded and be tough to seal. You mite try that.
You can take the hose off the outdrive and then hook a hose to see if the problem is in the outdrive or motor.

Also, when you are on the muffs, you need to plug the hole at the front of the bullet on the drive.

I did plug the hole before, thought maybe it wasnt good enough so thats why I submerged it.

I will check the nipple, but I did suck on it and it seemed to be leak free.

Does it need to run at a certain RPM to prime? I only run it for about 30 seconds so I don't overheat it.

Thanks again

This could go bad in so many ways, I suggest it doesn't.

Check that hose connection for corrosion, and the gasket between it and the H fork. The raw water pump pulls with a lot more force than a human can.

Just asking, but make sure the hoses are on the pump in the right order. Bottom one goes to the outdrive, top one goes to the Thermostat housing.

OK, you were right about the nipple. It looked horrible so I changed it.

Still no water to the raw water pump. I don't think there are and leaks. It kind of seems like the earmuffs I got arent sealing very well. When I squeeze the with my hands the water makes it to the pump, otherwise no water to the pump.

I bought the Volvo muffs from West Marine, is there something that seals better?

Any ideas?

Could be due to low water pressure from your hose.
One other thing, did you plug the secondary pickup? It's the round hole at the base of the drive just in front of the skeg.

I use a bungie strap and wrap it around the muffs to help it seal to the drive. But you should be getting something up there.
