Ok, well maybe not so much a mystery but seemed kinda weird. Have a 1986 Force 50 HP. Was out on the lake Thurs cruising and the engine kind of started coughing out, so I backed off of it and it continued to sputter some but only lasted about 30 sec. Well, took it slow to a dock and shut it off and had a look at it. Couldn't find anything out of the ordinary so I had the other guy I was with crank it up, sounded fine but I noticed there was VERY little water coming through the hole. So I felt the engine, it wasn't like scorching hot or anything but I wouldnt want to lay my hand there on it for long. Well sat around a few mins and started it up and then had typical water flow again. So, went on my way keeping a close eye on it and for the most part it seemed normal. I did notice one other time it seemed to stop again. I also noticed that even when it was pumping normal, there was some steam coming out with the water. So I replaced the impeller (the old one looked to be fine though) and am going to replace the thermostat (had the original in it and looked a bit gunked up). Should this fix it? I can't really think of anything else. All water channels seem clear, etc. I do know I don't want to mess it up. It runs like a charm and I want to keep it that way. thank you!!

Re: cooling mystery

The impeller may have looked fine but sometimes the rubber outside can seperate from the metal or plastic inside and cause symtoms that you dsscribe. Just keep an eye on it.
