To start, engine is a '78 Johnson 85, Model No. 85ML78C

Long story short, I replaced my water pump (and thermostats) due to the engine getting hot.

Well it pumps really strong and keeps its cool properly now, however I have water coming out from the spot indicated in this picture:

I don't remember water coming out of this spot before. Problem is, I pulled the lower unit 3 times trying to figure this out. I can't find anything out of place. I used 3M 847 adhesive to seal the water pump when I installed it. (That stuff is like snot). The problem (if it is one) appeared when I first started the motor.

I pulled the water pump off the lower unit again, cleaned up all the mating surfaces and resealed everything. It did not affect the problem at all after I got the lower unit back on and fired it up again.

When I replaced the water pump, I just replaced the impeller. I reused the plastic housing and the metal plates that go with it. There were no cracks or anything in the plastic, it looked good.

I guess the silver lining is that I've gotten really good (and fast) and dropping and reinstalling the lower unit. :D

So, my question is, is my memory bad and water always emerges from here? If not, any ideas on what I could have done wrong or why water would be coming out here?

Thanks in advance.

So, you are concerned about water coming out from behind the lower mount? That is absolutely normal and intended. There are two large drain holes back there. In fact the drainage can be rather significant. If they didn't drain, the drive shaft cavity would fill up with water and damage the crankshaft and splines area, possibly even get into the powerhead crankcase..

as above. if you look closely you will see the manufactured holes for it.

The engine should also dump water out of the two exhaust relief holes at the top of the midsection, once the thermostats open up. Usually a minute or so after starting.
