I have got this engine (BE15BALCOB)to start first time with the help of new plugs and a carb clean, Reading several replys to problems helped me out.
The problem now is I can recall a jet of water from the eng but I am only getting a drip. I dont want to cook it so does the eng have to get up to temp before it starts pumping water or do you think its blocked. Not sure what to do next.I have a manual ordered but does any one have a schematic with part nos they could Scan/copy and email. It would be useful to be able to describe what I am looking at.
Many Thanks.
P.S Thanks ROSCOE .030 plug gap was spot on.

I don't have a manual, but did you try using a small wire in the hole? It may just be blocked with debris.

Can you touch the cylinder head when the engine is warmed up? You should be able to hold your fingers there for a few seconds without getting burned? If not, it's impeller time or the T-stat is sticking. Is this engine used in saltwater?

Thanks for the tip Cobra I will give a try.
Thanks rick for the reply, yes it has been used in saltwater I thought I had flushed it , maybe i forgot. As for the temp ,I could touch the block for several seconds but I have no idea how long the eng takes to warm up at idle. I didnt want to cook the head so i did not run it for long. Looks like I need a crash course in outboard repairs.
Thanks
Paul

Have you changed the water pump lately and checked the thermostat? Has it been sitting a long time? Trying to put all the info together. Give us some backround on the engine so that we can offer better advice.

Yes it has been idle for several years. prior to the last time it was used it had a major service including a strip down of the cooling system.I presume the pump would have been checked. I am hoping to get to the point where I can service the engine myself without it having to go into the repair shop.I will have to wait for the manual to turn up and look into all the excellent advice I have been given in this forum.
I will either killing it or curing it.
Thanks
Paul

Re: cooling problems 15 hp 1985 evinrude

A sometimes overlooked part of the cooling system on the OMC 9.9/15 HP of these years is the exhaust cover. There are two, the inner and the outer. The water first enters the powerhead here. There are some small passages under the gaskets that can easily get blocked by buildup, crud, gasket sealer, etc. Of course, if the water is blocked off here, none goes to the rest of the powerhead. If everything else checks out. you may want to check this before you get into pulling the powerhead. The water indicator is located on the outer cover, so if you're not getting any flow, you need to be careful about running your motor too long. You're wise to wait on your manual bfore you start taking the motor apart. I'm a charter member of the "Parts Left Over Society" myself.

Check the watertube grommet under the powerhead, powerhead will have to be removed, unless you have a very small roto-rooter.

Update, Just in case enyone is interested the engine is now pumping water. The solution was to remove the pipe to the overboard outlet and connect a garden hose. The pressure built up against the blockage and let go. The water started backflushing nicely and was left flushing for a few minutes.
