Cooling system questions on Ford/Volvo 270

I am rebuilding the raw water pump on my Ford/Volvo 270. I got a new impeller and gaskets. Should I put it back together with vaseline or some non rubber attacking grease?

The circulating pump has never been replaced in over 35 years. Should I replace it?

Last, what kind and temperature of thermostat should I use?

One final note. Everything aluminum on the engine seems to be shedding its paint. The steel is better but has similar problems. Any suggestions on repainting the aluminum and steel after I stripped the old off. I have some two part epoxy primer I could spray on.

Dishwashing detergent like Dawn or Joy on the impeller.
not sure about the t-stat range.
Circulating pumps last a long time, mine is a 1990 original.

Boat engine waterpumps don't have the extra stress on the bearing from swinging a fan, the bearing wears out causing excessive shaft runout and destroys the seal, when the seal goes you have a leak in your bilge, so probably a good idea to change it out, then your half way to changing the timing chain set or belt I think in your case, and the fuel pump too while your in there.
