Re: cooling water

I just got my '74 85hp johnson w/ no tell tale, but we were able to see that water was exiting by pulling the motor halfway up while it was idling in the lake so that water intake was still in the water but the water out was above the water line. If you're at home that should be a lot easier to do without having to hoist the engine up. I read yesterday some threads about adding a tell tale I'll look up the links if its something you'd be interested in.

*edit* here's a thread about adding a tell tale http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=204227

Re: cooling water

Hold your palm just behind the exhaust relief ports in the upper midsection. When the thermostats open, water droplets will form on your hand, if the system is operating properly. Also, the thermostats open at 143 degrees-you should be able to put your hand on the heads, block for 15-20 seconds. If it is too hot to put your hand on it for that time, then it is overheating. The hot horn should sound at 212.

Re: cooling water

I have a 1975 9.9Hp Evinrude that does not have a tell tale but it spits quite a good spray out of the little upper exhaust hole, that is something that you really couldn't miss, especially if you were looking for it.

I don't know the exact design of your motor but I am surprised that after about 10 seconds or so, you cannot see water coming out of this area. If the engine is also getting too hot to touch (you just said it got hot idling) I would want to take a close look at that impeller before I ran it too long.

Re: cooling water

One more point. The water should still spray out of this exhaust hole whether the thermostat is operational or not. So, although it is always nice to confirm that the t-stat is working properly, if you are not seeing a spray out the back, I would suspect it is more of an impeller/water pump issue myself.

And yes, the thermostat is a part that can be replaced if need be.

Re: cooling water

What I did on my 225 vro was ,I took temperature reading usig a temp probe and a multimeter before and after the waterpump impellor was changed.. thermostats should also be checked to make sure that they opperate at the correct temperatures,
Kind regards.

Re: cooling water

The thermostat (vernatherm) is located between the heads, just under the exhaust cover, at the lower rear of the engine. In addition to the thermostat, there is a check valve in the housing which must be in good condition.

Re: cooling water

water wont come out the exhaust holes until the t stat opens. run it on muffs and feel is the water coming out of the foot on the port side of engine is warm to see if the impeller and t stat is working
