Would it do any harm to remove the thermostats on a 100 hp outboard? If I remove the hoses from the housing there is a good flow but I over heat anyway. My though is if I remove them and run it with no overheating then I know deffinetly its the thermostats.
Thanks for all advice in advance!

Re: cooling

Ahoy, Frankeu. It would probably be safe enough for a diagnostic test run . . .15 or 20 minutes, but don't leave them out or you will end up with a warped head.
Good luck.
JB

Re: cooling

JB Thanks for responding. I dont understand why it would warp the heads? I pulled the hoses of the thermostat housing just to see if any water was going through. There is a sold flow coming out of both sides. I take it the pump is ok?

Re: cooling

J.B. is right Frankeu. Running for extended periods without T-stats will cause unequal
heating in the water jacket, which can cause all kindsa grief. After all, outboard manufacturers put them there for a good reason, or else they would just save the money on the production line.
But you may have a failing impeller. As they wear out, they get week. The water pressure they can generate decreases, and they cant push water thru a partially closed t-stat.

------------------
the Early bird get's the worm...So, he don't have to stop for bait.

Re: cooling

Franf, definately need to look at the water pump, is a wear item an needs to be replaced periodically...any overheating problem you need to know pump is ok before any solid diagnosis can be done on rest of the system....
