Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

That's funny SN, I had a 12V Craftsman that did the exact same thing. The batteries were trash from day 1 and wouldn't hold a charge for nothing. Eventually the charger stopped working and Sears wants a mint for new batts and a charger. The drill itself was okay though.

Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

I have had a Makita 14.4 for 4 years now, and it has been flawless. Yeah, I spent something like $200 for it then, but it has been unstopable. We tried ryobis at work, and they were only being used for very basic work, and they were okay. We broke a lot of DeWalts on larger more abusive jobsites and switched to Makitas. I just think a person should spend more up front for a quality tool and not worry about it ever again.

Okay, I just went to Home Depot and they do have a LIFETIME warrantee on all their Rigid cordless tools and it does include the batteries!! It's a new thing they're doing. I bought a 3 piece set and it came with a free 90* impact driver so I got 4 pieces all together. It's really nice stuff. $349 for a hammer drill, circular saw, light and the driver. Also 2 batteries and 30 min. charger. Thanks for all the great advice!

Congratulations DR. I've been using chordless tools since they came out and even the crummiest of them is not so bad. I am sure they will serve you well. ;)

Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

I give my Ryobi drills more use than the average homeowner. Both the 12 & 14.4v are still running strong. I never smoked one yet, but the batteries are only lasting between 2 -3 years. The 14.4 volt I dropped from the second story roof. It struck a hose reel bolted to the house with 4 lag bolts. Ripped the entire reel right off the house. Also bent the 4" phillips bit bad. Drill works like new.

I'm sure the Dewalts and the like are better, but for the average handiman, the Ryobi holds up just fine.

I bought a hitachi 14.4 drill light combo 2 batteries and charger at lowes for like 90 bucks. works good around the house. We have dewalt at work that are abused and keep going. My BIL has the Ryobi 18 volt combo from Home depot and its a good value for around the house

Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

I've been reading the replies and I guess I'm the cheapskake in the crowd. Many years ago when my Milwaukee 12 volt drill crapped out because one of the two batteries failed, I was astonished to find the replacement battery would cost me $50. Then I looked around and almost all replacement batteries for name brand cordless drill ran about the same. Then the Milwaukee 12 volt charger failed and they wanted another $50 for that. I then discovered that Harbor Freight wes selling a 12 volt cordless drill for about $15 which included drill, one battery and charger. They were made in China and, I bought 3 of them and they have been fine. When the batteries crap out, I still have the drills which I can toss and they have lasted longer than the Milwaukee did. By the way I did manage to recycle the remaining Milwaukee battery since it came with two batteries and have a functional Milwaukee cordless drill with a single kluged 12 volt battery which I recharge with a 12 volt trickle charger, also purchased from Harbor Freight. For the occasional homeowner use these cordless drills get, they work fine for the money.
I'm sure the professional quality of the Milwaukee and Ridgid is worth the dollars, but I'm just too cheap for that kind of spending. I'd rather save my dollars for boating expenses.

Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

I have a Ryobi 14.4 that get's used/abused. It came in a case with a flashligt and two batteries. Excellent drill. Mine is 2yrs old and I am building a boat with it. I've driven 2lbs of 1" deck screws and recharged 3 times. That included drilling a number of countersink holes as well. Recharge time ~1hr. Have never run out of juice with the two batts as long as the unused one goes on the charger when I pull it off the drill.

Could have gottel the 18v, but the weight of the 18v wears my arm out too quick...

Porter Cable was bought out be B & D about a year ago. It used to be owned by the Pentair group but I think they will simply become rebadged black and deckers now.

Re: Cordless drill Got a Rigid!

Just an FYI on another product with a great warrenty.

I bought a Stanley FatMax measuring tape from Home Depot. In less than a year I had managed to tear the tape making it useless. It had a one year warrenty. I took it back to Home Depot and they gave me a new one without issue. While I was filling in the paper work, I was told that I was lucky because if this had happened with any other manufacture, I would have had to go direct to the company. Appearently, Stanley stands by their product really well.

DR, great buy, I'm sure you will be very happy with your new toys...errr...tools.

Good deal. Now you are going to be running all over the house drilling and tightening things for no real reason just to be using the tools. I am a huge proponent of tools. I rest peacefully knowing I can fix about anything just by walking out to the garage...
