2 questions on a 1994 OMC Cobra 5.0.

My core plugs need replacing (rookie mistake) and there does not seem to be any damage (i know that I am lucky if there isn't). Now that I have become minimally educated I have examined the block (no cracks) and oil (clear) and both look okay. I now plan to put the plugs back in and start it up to see if there are any issues that cannot see visibly. Anyway here are my 2 questions...

Is there anything else I should check before I replace the plugs?

After/while replacing the core plugs should I seal them inside or outside with any sealant? Or just mallet them in and they are done?

thanks.

Re: Core Plug Questions

Use new ones (brass) and use sealer around the outside edge, and install them properly! DO NOT HAMMER ON EDGE. Use a socket that fits inside, but not too tightly.

Re: Core Plug Questions

thanks for the reply. What kind of sealant? I don't understand what the socket is for; can you please explain the purpose of the socket?

Thanks.

Re: Core Plug Questions

Am I to use the socket to assist in hammering the plugs back in?

Re: Core Plug Questions

Just about any sealer is fine, RTV, Permatex #2, etc.. The socket is used as a driver to install the plugs.

Great.

where is a good place to get the brass plugs for the OMC Cobra 5.0? Any marine shop or somewhere else?
