Re: Corner brace cracked on a brand new 1442 alumacraft/added pics

I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing that i started this thread as i feel like some people are getting testy with eachother and i don't want that to be the case.

Is eveyone on my side that i should get a either new boat or money back or should they just fix it.I have a feeling they will fight me on this tomorrow about getting a new boat but i get what some of you are saying. As in if it has 3 cracks now what will happen in the future with the boat. Also with the paint peeling off like paper that is probally not normal.

Well i will find out tomorrow what my fate is.

Don't worry about the guys getting testy. Happens on here occasionally, but usually we fuss over towing. Don't know how much time you spend on boards, but this one is actually remarkably civil. Anywho, Alumacraft makes some of their boats here (at least I think they still do) and they're generally pretty well thought of, but it sounds to me like you got a bit of a lemon. Based on the way the narrative has unfolded I'm inclined to think you should push for a new boat. How far you want to push is up to you. Good luck.

To be brutally honest, you should get your choice of a satisfactory solution if you are ok with a repair and it makes you happy then that is what matters. If you want a different boat then they should fulfill your request, I do know that they have done it in the past to keep cusotmers happy. The end reult should be your satisfaction and yours alone.

I can't believe they offer a 5 year paint warranty and don't use primer, wow.

Yes you should get a new boat or have your fixxed properly, I missed that you hadn't even had it on the water, if it can't even withstand shipping it is gonna come apart pretty quick once you get and engine on it and start banging across the water.

Sixmark, you have a valid point about not being able to babysit everyone, but you can still build a quality product, we at Bennington have gone from building 3 boats per day our first day back in '97 to high of 28 per day and were still able to win the JD power award.

We are the largest maker of pontoon boats in the country and have still either gotten the JD or come in second every one of the 8 years it has been offered so you can be big and have quality.

Granted a $40,000+ toon is way different than a $600 jon boat but the point is still valid.

boater1234, go in nice and see what they will do for you, it sounds like your dealer is on board since they already said it isn't right but at the end of the day you should have a boat that you are satisfied with and are comfortable won't fall apart on you in 2 years, I am interested in how this comes out.

Oh, and we are testy because most of us are trapped inside and can't run our boats.

Blue tape (and others) bad, GREEN tape good!!!!!!!! Even though it costs and arm and a leg, it's well worth it.

Yeah and when you have too many people doing QC that is what happens, that was the point, you try to share information and you get chastised for it, my mistake, I guess I should sit back and criticize every manufaturer.......tell me do you know of any that are perfect? Think over your answer carefully. I also included information on how to get the problem resolved as well. Quite frankly I don't care if people never buy another Alumacraft boat , it's not going to affect me in the slightest. You can be reasonable and approach things with that mentality or you can go gonzo.......I know, maybe we should take up a petition to have them put out of business.
I did not mean to try and refute what you said because what you said I agree with.
Maybe what I should have said was that if the Quality Control people were allowed to do their job with the power to stop production when they find problems, the problems would go away and stay away.
But then the bean counters get involved and when they override QC, the problem(s) will never go away.
But hey, they still maintain their ISO certification since they are doing things consistantly bad, right?

Mistakes happen, as much as everyone hates to hear that. Its manufacturing and I dont care who does it they have mistakes. The key at this point is what they will do to correct it. Most manufactures will be happy to correct the issue to avoid people bad mouthing their product. As far as the paint goes, tape should not take it off period. I work in an industry where we do flexographic printing on films (which is similar to painting) and we actually use a variety of masking tape to test weather the ink is correctly adhearing to the film. If the tape pulls off the ink then we know we have an issue. The manufacturer likely has a similar test, it is just a situation where prep work failed and now the paint is coming off. Besides if it has a 5 year paint warranty then I would be excersising my right to have it corrected.

Well here is what happen guys.I went in with a positive attitude toward the guy until he called me out on the cracks. He said i only see the one,[please keep in mind this guy is blind as a bat]he wanted me to show him the other 2 and i did and he said they were not cracks and the other guys there said they were in front of him and he wasn't happy with them.I also showed him how one piece of tape just pulls the paint off like nothing, also keep in mind i went out and bought some of that frog paint tape which to me is the best for painting.

Well i put a piece of tape on there real easy and wallahh the paint peeled. His response was it's a jon boat that is normal,i said so this would be ok if you just bought it with your money right, that was the end of the conversation as he had nothing to say.So i went and checked out the other boat which was the same boat and low and behold in the same spot was starting a hairline crack.I said thats enough for me i would like a refund and no questions after that he wrote me a business check on the spot and was an *** after that as i was leaving. He said i just wanted my money back and i said i just wanted a boat that has no cracks. That was the end so i'm going boat shopping tomorrow. You know i could of lived with the paint but the cracks were just flat out unexceptable to me.So now i know what to look for, belive me i will go over the mext boat with a fine tooth comb.

I totally understand it may have some scratches and mabe some nicks in it and maybe some peeled paint were it was moved a few times and i expect that from most jon boats, but i will not buy or i should say give any money till i get the boat i want even if they have to move 10 of them on top of eachother.I hate marina like that who talk down to people that have very little money like there so much better pisses me off.But bottom line is i got the money back and i'm going to look at the g3 1442 and the lowe 1440 tomorrow.I will get back with you guys and i thank you guys for all your help. The bad thing is i lost my carpet job and cut out a new plywood floor and even waterproofed it with a 10yr stain.Oh well time to start over i guess.

I think you came out on top here, I really don't think you would have ever gotten it right And you always would have wondered.

I am pretty sure that is not the first time he has had that converasion about one of those boats.

G3 is a better boat, at least I haven't seen alot of post about problems with them, good luck and glad it worked out for you.

Re: Corner brace cracked on a brand new 1442 alumacraft/added pics

Well i just want to first say by far i don't think alumacraft is a bad company i just got a bad boat as all the other jon boats on the lot they had were perfect besides the other one like mine.I may of been just a certain friday some guys said the hell with it and just screwed the welds i don't really know. But i went to a place that has had the same boat as i just bought the only difference is the year so i went ahead and bought it.The boat is in mint condition and even tested the paint with the strongest painters masking tape i could find and the paint said good try fellow. In other words the paint was stiff as a board not a flake or peel.

The welds were in perfect condition with no signs of cracks as i went over this boat with a magnifying glass, just joking. But i did go over it extremely well and the guy asked me what i was doing as i have been there 20 times before looking at the jon boats and that was the only one that ever caught my eye but never had the money for it till now.The boat has been siting there since summer and i said it was meant to be as it has not sold by now it is a sign to buy it.

The no center seat boats are not very popular here and they are very hard to find,i mean hard as i only found the 2 where the boats were cracked and this one within 250 miles.I get home and a rivet was missing,no big deal as it is in the floatation area and i just painted a small screw green and poped it in and it is just as strong as a rivet. Can't even tell were it was.It was not in the boats structure just in the back were the gas tank sits there is 4 rivets and one was missing so that is taken care of.I'm almost done with the carpet and floor, then i need to put my rod holders in and i don't have a clue were i'm going to put those.I really love the boat as it has a big 4ft front deck.I will take pics of it after it is done. Thanks guys for all your help. Also the deciding factor on buying it was the money as this boat was $1520 and he gave it to me for $1400+tax.+i get to register it myself instead of through a marina which is close to $100 and i can do it myself for $23,I don't get that a bit.

I checked out the lowes 1440,the tracker 1542 and some of the other alumacraft boats and this by far was the best deal as the lowe was over $1550+tax and $100 to register it everywere i went so i would of paid close to $1800 for a 14ft boat when i paid only $1500 out the door for this one, plus it was wider then all the other ones.I found a brand new 1648 for $1389 but i don't want a mod v or a center seat and the next and final boat i want is the 1648 no center seat flat bottom from alumacraft. That thing is big enough to live in.Plus i will get a new 25hp motor next yr with it.Well thanks again guys.
