Thanks to reading a lot of posts in this forum and help from people on this board I have this motor ready to try for the first time. I purchased OMC Hi Vis lube for this motor but I am not sure if this is the right stuff. I have read a lot of posts with regards to different types of gear oil and have pretty much confused myself. Should I use this or purchase Hypoid 90 gear oil or something different?

Thanks,

Scott

HiVis or 80/90W outboard lower unit lube is what's recommended for your 5.5hp. I belive in 1962 they would have offered Type C/"Premium Blend" as an alternative fluid, but they recinded this recommendation later. You should not use Type C/"Premium Blend" in your 5.5hp.

Thanks for the information. The manual I have says to use OMC premium blend gear oil. I read that premium blend was the same as Type "C" which I used for my '69 85 HP Electric shift Evinrude. That is what started my confusion, before I always made sure I got Type "C" for electric shift lower units and not regular 90W lube. I didn't think it made sense to use Type "C" for this motor. Is there a perfered lube for this motor? Oil is cheap and gears are expensive or hard to find.

Thanks again,

Scott

Hey Scott , If manual says to use premium blend thats what I would stick with. As a rule of thumb most of the old Jonnnys used type "C" lube especially the electric shift(HYDRO-ELECTRIC DRIVE) motors. Go into your local outboard shop and ask for type "C" lower unit lube and if the salesman isn't 30 or older they will tell you there is no such thing :D . I would stick with premium blend though just to comply with the manual..... Better safe than sorry. Hope this helps, RR

Well, I've got to respectively (ie with respect) differ from Riddlers Ride. I get this from a post by Joe Reeves some time back where he said that OMC only specified this lube in manual lower units for a short time. When they started having failures in the feild after a couple years, they switched back to recommending HiVis (appx 90W).
I've also got a '64 manual where they spec Type C for a manual shift outboard. But I don't use it.
