Correct impeller for Tohatsu MFS 20.

Hi folks,

Just purchased a Tohatsu MFS 20 short shaft, manual start. The motor only has 2 hours on it but I believe was MFD' in 2008 (CA emissions sticker is punched Jan 2008), S/N is 008307XH. The pee hole is inconsistent...good flow then spurts, then nothing for a second or two so I thought I'd better check the impeller just for drill.

Sure enough, it was pretty limp and there was some rubber residue in the cup. I've tried looking up the correct part on the web and I get results for Nissan/Tohatsu 18HP but only 2 stroke 20HP...some list a Sierra 18-8921, some a 18-8922. I've polished the cup with a drill mounted brass wire brush to a near mirror finish, so I think I can get by with just the impeller rather than a full kit. Any idea what the correct part # is, and a good source (no authorized dealers near here).

Thanks in advance for your help, and for maintaining this informative site.

John,

Yes, your year of manufacture was 2008.

The correct impeller for an MFS20C is 334650210M IMPELLER (9.9B2-18E2 & 9.9/15/20 4-STROKE) $23.31, available from any dealer, including me. We're as close as your mailbox or UPS truck :)

In our shop, we always do the complete kit, 362873220M $50.68, because the pump will work better, last longer, and it's the same labor. At $85 an hour, it's well worth the extra $27... But, if you are 100% sure the cup and plate are perfect, with Zero grooving, an impeller would be OK.

If you do not have a Nissan oR Tohatsu dealer near you, then visit a Mercury or Evinrude dealer...Same engine = same parts.

Gentlemen, thanks for your prompt replies, I've been lurking for a while and can see that you both are very helpful and patient with Newbies!

Paul: I'll double check the cup & plate with an 8X lupe for any defects and buy the kit if required. As Elvin suggested, I'll check the local Merc dealer for parts as they are only minutes away and I'd like to get it up & running today.

Elvin: Thanks for the info on Merc interchange, there is a local Merc dealer in town.... do you have the equivalent model # just in case the parts person is "by the book" only?

Thanks again from an outboard Newbie, my experience is limited to gas & diesel inboards only. Just for fun here are pics of my latest project I'm just wrapping up, a 1956 Packard 374 CID Marine V8.

Quick followup..... I went to the local Merc dealer (5 minutes away) and was greeted by a snotty young woman at the parts counter. I was informed that Tohatsu DOES NOT make any Mercury outboards and unless I had a Mercury part number she couldn't help me. Called the authorized Tohatsu dealer (30 minutes away) and no problem, come & get one.

Guess which dealer I'll be giving my business to from here on out...........;)

Snotty nosed woman needs a little education. Send me their phone number and I will call and explain to her that the 30 hp and down is a Tohatsu:)

Hi Elvin,

People like her will self destruct on their own, and take down the business with them. On a refreshing note, I drove to the Tohatsu dealer, Paradise Point Marine in Stockton CA and guess what...another young woman. This one with a big smile and "how can I help you?"

I told her I called about an impeller and was told it was in stock..she said "Let me double check for you to make sure it is the right one". She looked it up, pulled the part and compared it to the old one. What a refreshing change from the first place!

Got the impeller ($21.00) and an oil filter ($10.00), both genuine Tohatsu parts. Now I know where to go.

I have another question, but I should start another thread.

Thanks again,

John
