I have been reading a lot of the post on here and I find that the outboards that seem to have the most trouble is Johnson/Evinrude. Is that because there is more of them sold? Thanks Flash

flashele

That's most of it and along with fact that most people wouldn't post here if they didn't have a problem. There are ALOT more old OMC products running around than any other.

We are starting to see fewer posts relating to Force motors. Could it be that their numbers are decreasing? Still crossing my fingers that mine keeps running. :)

Ya know Roscoe, people used to make fun of this forum and force/merc, seemed that every other question was about a force outboard....the last month I thought nobody was lookin at a motor that wasnt a johnrude, LOL.....the force people will be back, many of them seem to be owned by fair weather boaters, they wont be out for a couple months yet......

Don't know about everyone else, but I have owned merc/mariner all my life and have had no problems from none of them and I use mine year round somewhere or other.

Had a force once also. Had it for five years and had no problems from it either.

Has a lot to do with how you treat and maintain them.

Re: Correct me if I am wrong

In the "old days" we here in the US didn't have much free-trade. Our outboard choices were limited to big US names like Merc and OMC. That's pretty much what most boaters owned back then. There just weren't Yamaha dealers on each corner. Most of today's big names like Yamaha, Suzuki, and Honda didn't sell big until the 1980's when 4-strokes and free-trade popped up. They also brought a new level of competetion to the US. Then the 1990's hit, and IMO, that's about when Merc and OMC were having problems. They made some blunders while trying to keep up with the pack. It seems to me that most of the OMC problems here are on their older outboards and some of those shameful 1990's models.

I expect Bombardier (Johnson/Evinrude) to get a good grip again by 2005 and never look back. Maybe their E-tech is the ticket? Suzuki is on the prowl too. And the other's aren't going to back off either. It's all good for us. ;)

I think you're right on there being more OMC's still around. Look at the age of a lot of these motors still in service and guys working on them. They were very good, dependable motors and the fact that the guys are willing to do the work to keep them running sort of attests to this.

I think omc was great in the early years. I've never owned anything but omc. I'm running a '84 xp 150 three times a week year round and haven't had any major problems in 20 years. I service about every three months and i believe the more it sits the worse it will get.

with OMC's demise a few years back seemed like that was the end of the story but as we can see Bombardier is back big time in fact if they can get the marketing down I think they will be #1 by 2005

This is the 2nd time I've seen a post about e-tech. I searched and found refs to Honda Scooters, and assumed they had and etech outboard line coming. Is it Bombardier Forktail? What's it about or do you have a link?

Thanks Forktail. Very cool. I am thinking of downsizing to a whaler 13 one day, and the e-tec 40 looks like the perfect engine.
