1979 55 hp evinrude model# 55975......I seem to be having a difficult time trying to find correct piston and ring set (.30 over) for this motor. Chart seems to jump from 50hp to 60hp.....dont see 55hp???

Parts list calls for Piston 30 over Part #389664 with Wrist Pin. Should include rings but if not the part# is Ring Set 388907.

Promarine has it. They are in Florida. I think it was about $169.00. You are right. That is a pretty high price. It is a Wiseco piston. I ordered some last year and they were about $95.00 apiece but they were not Wiseco. They were for a 200 hp Evinrude. Best of Luck.

Call Ron at 704-839-6548. He stocks a bunch of aftermarket pistons at a decent price.

Re: Correct piston and ring set

Thanks James, Do I need to wait until monday to call him? Just hoping to give this motor another year until I can afford to upgrade to a good used 70hp.Otherwise I would do a complete rebuild on this one. I am attempting to replace the top piston only.Head gasket failed. Pulled head and intake. Removed top rod caps via intake opening to remove piston. Should prove to be a tricky manuever to reinstall without losing roller bearings!!! Anyone ever attempted this?

Nope, not without disassembly, but the usual procedure is to stick the needles in with grease. Vasilene was the good old fashioned method till they came out with the nice sticky needle bearing grease.

Yes, call him Monday after 9am. Cant see any reason why the piston cannot be replaced. The crank bearings are caged. Will need to guide the con rod or it will foul the case or damage the crank. Frankly the only good way is the correct way.
Good luck.

Thanks again, I plan to make a little screw press jig on the back of the block so I can push the piston up to crank very gently!

Re: Correct piston and ring set

It worked!....Not sure I would like to do it again. Took several attempts to get the piston con. rod in proper orientation to crank, and then just as many to get the cage bearings in place. However, think I found the last surviving NOS .30 over piston on the planet. Due to scarcity and price of parts available for this engine, I'm happy with the outcome.Motor ran great this morning on the river. Now going to start looking for a good used 70-75hp motor. Are they easier to find parts for than the 1979 55?

Well done that man.
Don't know your location so I don't know if the rebuilt complete outboard I have would be of any help. Shipping is not my bag. '91 70HP Evinrude.
