yep separate them.
Dont stress too much if they come off, You a only doing a compression test so you a only turning the engine over a few times.
Its when a sparkplug goes dead and the engines running for a while that it is the riskiest

Idea, what if I get one piece of wire, maybe a coat hanger or?, bend it around all 3 plugs then just ground the end of the wire? if that will work, how far apart should the plugs be?

I use test leads with alligator clips on the end. The alligator clips have rubber boots over them. I shove one alligator clip into the spark plug boot. The rubber boot holds it in snug. The other end of the lead gets clipped to engine ground.

Or, make or buy a mutli cylinder spark tester, and hook all the leads up while testing compression. Now, you can test compression, and verify spark at the same time, killing two birds with one stone.
