I have a 1989 E40TLCEC Evinrude outboard and it has a water pressure guage. Currently it reads about 6 psi at wot. I am putting in new inpellar and will see what that brings it to. My ? is that the guage is teed into the tell-tale right before it exits the cowling. Is there a better place to install and get a more reliable reading.

I d want to install mine on the block or head myself... but there is a poster here who Ts off a line that leaves the block and goes to the tell tale... everythign is relative I guess...so you are on the right track...install a new water pump carefully and then see what the reading is...at WOT it should be above 20 psi...but what ever it is...thats your base from now on...or until you change guages...the factory has a place on my motor and it is on the head and goes right through the head to the block...so IN MY MIND, I think that is the best place.

A 40 JohnnyRude will typically read in the 15 - 17 PSI range and the "T" into the tell tale works just fine on that motor. Tell-tales are simply a pin hole leak in relation to the amount of water passing through the cooling system so on that engine it will not be of any benefit to tap in elsewhere.
