Was just looking at tachs for my 1974 115hp Johnson which has an 8 pole system. I found a set of Faria instruments & asked the seller if the tach would work with an 8-pole alternator & he said no. Wondering why, I went to Faria website & found this little ditty....."Older model outboards (prior to 1977) may have the tach signal wire originating at the ignition system though they are alternator equipped. All alternator tachometers may be used on these systems by disconnecting the tach signal wire at the engine and connecting that wire to the unrectified alternator signal at the rectifier. Be certain the number of alternator poles match the tachometer pole setting of the tach."......Is there a tach to connect to this system without having to rewire the system?

Moving to Johnson/Evinrude Troubles and Repair. I think you'll get a better response there.

The gray wire for the tach is unrectified. It comes from the alternator via the terminal block.

I wonder if that applies to 77 models also, since mine's an 8 pole also, and it's been a little more difficult to find a tach

I'll bet it does mikey. There used to be another response in here for this (don't know why it isn't here now) & it was to buy an OMC tach. I plan on following that advice

Pull the fly wheel and count the number of poles.
The below picture is compliment of IndyMike. I have read some erroneous post on here about tach settings and I have came to conclusion that the best way to know what your tach should be set on if there has any doubt is to pull the flywheel and count the number of poles yourself on the stator.
