I have called a Force repair shop, read numerous threads on the subject, and searched various websites, and I seem to get conflicting information about the correct thermostat for my motor? 1988 Force 85hp - 856x8a. I see the 18-3553, 18-3557 & 18-3559 all seem to be options

Normally I would use the original thermostat as reference for the new part, but when I took the housing off for inspection, the thermostat was missing. Instead, all I found was an old beat up O-ring/grommet.

Therefore, I have 2 questions for the pro?s:

1. What is the correct thermostat for the 856x8a?
2. What is the part number for the corresponding grommet?

I don?t know if it makes any difference, but I live on the gulf coast where both the air and water are warm 8 months out of the year.

Thanks to all!

Hi, I am in Silverhill and have a 1984 85 hp.

Iboats shows the 18-3559 for your engine.

There is a link mercruiserpart dot com has the info you want.

F528068 is the thermostat number
25-F84504 is the grommet number.

Some of the guys here know where the best prices are.

Good luck. Where do you fish the most?

Lower Mobile Bay and ICW for me.

The thermostat for your engine operates at 110 degrees. Here are the some product codes for the thermostat for your series engine. From mercury: ....... F528068, and OEM....F694065. Should run around 35 bucks.

Hey Mike that's wild that you live in Silverhill, because I actually passed through there today heading down to Magnolia. As for fishing, I kayak fish on the small rivers and streams around here (Bass and Bream). But now that I got my hands on this boat, a.k.a "stinkpot," I plan to find new holes to explore such as, well, the Bay and DI...lol. I cant wait to sink my hook in the mouth of a big Bull Red. Lets stay in touch.

As for the thermostat, I called up Steele Creek in Satsuma and he had the parts I needed on hand. And yes, it was the 110 stat. Total for stat and grommet was $42 after tax. I didnt mind spending an extra 2 or 3 bucks to keep a local guy in business.

Thanks for the help fella's

Glad we could help out. It is the point of the whole thing.:)

I have a 1984 1510 (16ft) Bayliner fish and ski, with the 85 hp Force.
So, I don't get out to the big reds, but there are plenty fish in the bay.

pewterwyz@gulftel.com so we don't bore these folks.

It is my understanding that the 110* thermostat is only for the F, G, and H series motors.
I believe your motor needs the 18-3553 143* thermostat.
