I have an old (1969) 120hp, recently overhauled, which overheated. The impeller is fairly new, and is pumping steadily into the boat, so I wish to check the thermostat between the manifold and exhaust elbow. I fear it may be stuck or missing (if missing, the water may not be cooling the (entire) block). The overheat occurred at very low RPM, after only 5-10 minutes of operation.
The trouble is, as shown in the attached photo, this particular old-style of elbow has some extremely difficult to access bolts retaining it to the manifold. The pic shows the engine sitting in my garage, but it's presently in the boat.
Is anyone aware of a source for a wrench which could clear the recessess on those exhaust elbow bolts? I've tried snapon, craftsman, great neck (autozone), & true value combination wrenches, as we as multiple brands of sockets. None of them come close to clearing horizontal and vertical obstructions on the assembly. I even tried using a thin walled socket with a flat piece welded to the end of it.
I would assume there is a wrench/socket designed for this, but have been unable to locate it.
