Hi,

I have a Lowrance X51 and have been to the online tutorials but still have questions after a pro fisherman made a comment to me "we all know fishfinders are to locate structure and don't show fish".

O.K. I see ton's of "fish" when in the "foolproof" mode but on switching to the "fisharch" not one fish is dispalyed. The transducer is correctly fitted and operational.

Once the boat is stationary it would appear as if the fishfinding ability completely dissappears as fish arches are only dispalyed once moving.

I freshwater fish and was wondering about settings. Anyone have any settings they would care to share that may make my life easier. i.e sensitivity, grayline, scroll speed etc.

PS: Is it a fishfinder or a structure finder.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew
A fish finder will show anything that is under the boat in the transducers cone angle.
As far as settings turn the sensitiveity way up untill you have lots of false readings then turn down to point where just have a very few false readings. Gray line is for seeing fish on the Bottom like large catfish or sturgeon and if set correctly will also help tell the size of fish. Turn it up until you just have a thin solid bottom line. Set this way larger fish will gray out in the middle just like the bottom does. You can see cavity of the fish if set right. Scroll speed really affects how long history is on the screen but will change the shape of arches a little as well. I set mine on the slow side most of the time.

When stopped you will not see fish arch unless one of you move. If the fish stays under the boat in the cone of the transducer then what you will see is a line accrossed the screen at the depth that the fish is. If you move slowly over the fish and the fish is not moving then the fish will make a nice arch if your transducer is pointed straight down. If it is pointer foward then you will see the front part of the arch. If point to the back then you will see the back half of the arch.

In the fish picture mode many of the fish will actually something else. A bush or tree under the water will often show up as fish.
