Re: Corroded Battery Clamps

There are probably 16 dozen ways to do this, but
here's what I do, remove the clamp, wire brush it and the post until shiny, replace and tighten, coat with a layer of chassis grease, years from now it will be corrosion free. :)

Your clamps are copper. The posts are lead.

The result is electrolysis.

Disconnect them when not in use.

Good luck. :)

Re: Corroded Battery Clamps

and if you don't feel so inclined, read the first part of jb's post again... it bites eh? :D even if they're brass or lead, there will be some diff in the bolts or something...

i used to have a startup job of cleaning battery posts - i still am sensitive to that smell, you know, the bluish white powder on the terminals. i liked using baking soda in warm water (so it would mix), then lay the terminal ends down in it (a disposable party cup) until they quit bubbling, pour out and repeat @ 2x. then clean like SS listed. then rub real good with some kind of O2 inhibitor (grease is good) and clamp up again. yes, rub it all inside every surface, it'll squeeze out later. spray/rub down what got exposed during reclamp. sit back & enjoy a good connection :D lol

for the ole wives tail of grease being a nonconductor, and preventing the connection from being correct.... true- but only for the spots that aren't metal-to-metal . so go with grease or the nice red batt spray. heck, vaseline, lard, even the spray from a fire extinguisher would work. same principle ;)

Re: Corroded Battery Clamps

There is a product called "NO-OX" that we use on battery terminals in the Telco power rooms (and let me tell you, we phone companies have a lot of batteries) It's a conductive grease like substance that you smear on all exposed metal. I use it on all of my batteries..all of the time. You may have to look hard for it ...try the big electrical supply houses...but it's worth the effort.

...and another:

After the thorough cleaning you refit clamps, tighten and cover it with Automotive Anticorrosion Body spray (preferably the thin type, that stays sticky).
