Wondering if this looks like cosmetic or serious damage to this sterndrive. It’s an older boat that has been in Lake Powell most it’s life. I want to make an offer but don’t want to be stuck with costly repairs.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It is hard to tell from a picture. . . sort of looks like a white film on top of the paint. Certainly needs closer inspection.

Throw some CLR at it, see if that white scale will come off.

Other than that, looks like an Alpha One Gen II. Wide gimbal housing says 1995 and newer...

Post up the engine and drive serial numbers and we can tell you exactly what it is (or should be ;))

Looks more like mineral deposits than corrosion to me, with a lack of cleaning. The anodes on the drive don’t look seriously worn or depleted - on ends of trim rams, front of cavitation plate. If it was water berthed in a Marina where stray current was an issue I think you’d see the anodes eaten up before the drive.

I think Chris has got you on the right path with clr. Minerals get baked on the drive when hot, especially what’s above the water when trimmed out. When the ambient temps are hotter like where you are this will only be worse.

id be more concerned to get repair records, did the seller do basic annual maintenance?

Looks like your average FW crud after a season and not wiping down after it, to me. Worst case it’s excessive heat markings.
