Corrosion Question

Hey guys, wondering what some of the best methods or materials are to avoid any type of corrosion on electrical? I'm talking about terminal connections, simple audio wires and their connectors, etc etc. I just put a new AC adaptor into the boat because the old one was rusted to all hell, and want to try to minimize the corrosion and rusting that is bound to happen. I use the boat in the salt quite frequently and I know this adds to the problem, but are there any products on the market that helps decrease the level of corrosion, control it, or stop it entirely?

Right now I'm using small amounts of Vaseline and just layering it on any exposed or close to exposed wires.

Thanks;

Re: Corrosion Question

I have always used the pink spray battery terminal protectant. It gives a good coating and is water/salt proof. Spray Corrosion Block is another good option.

Re: Corrosion Question

Go by any store that sells electrical supply and ask for Penetrox.

Re: Corrosion Question

Any electrical joint I make I always solder it, followed by liquid elecrical tape, followed by electrical tape. I haven't figured out anythign for the connections to a switch or what have you. That said, the other weekend I was in Napa and I asked the guy for some of that battery spray stuff, he said I'll do you one better. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember the name of it but it was in a white container, had a bruch on the cap, and it's black. I think is stays somewhat wet, but it covered really well. If I think of it tonight when I get home I'll look at the name of it. Napa guy said it was WAY BETTER than the battery spray stuff.

Re: Corrosion Question

Thanks guys, all great answers and advice! I'll take a look at a few of those products.

What are your thoughts on the Vaseline route? Anyone tried this before? I learned about it from working at fishing lodges. Seems to the be the cheapest way to avoid corrosion.

Re: Corrosion Question

Vaseline, liquid tape, grease all work....... it is actually best to start with marine grade pre-tinned wire for your best chances.
