corrosion under impeller wear plate

I'm in the middle of replacing the impeller on my "new to me" Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive. After removing the impeller housing, I pulled the wear plate off and the paint on the gearcase housing is lifting off and there is light surface corrosion under the paint causing it to lift and flake off.

Do I need to repaint this, and if so, what type of paint should I use? What surface prep do I need to do?

Thanks!

Re: corrosion under impeller wear plate

make sure the corrosion isnt goin through to the shaft seal!!! thats not good. i wire wheel the heck out of it then prime and paint it with outdrive paint and smear marine grease under the wear plate and housing. that is if it isnt real pitted up ;)

use a 3M pad on a drill. wire tends to contaminate the aluminium and accelerates corrosion in saltwater. clean with acetone and use a primer like zinc chromate.
