what does a new tohatsu OB in the 150-225hp range cost? id like to know both 2 and 4 stroke prices if they even still make big 2 strokes, thanks

Tohatsu, like Evinrude, does not believe in 4-stroke technology for anything other than small engines. Their 40 hp and above are TLDI(direct injection)engines. Due to demand and lack of production capability, there will be no 115's available until November and the 140 TLDI will not be avaialble until after January.

Elvin,<br /><br />Thats kinda opposite of what I thought the logic would be. <br />I thought since the little motors consume so little gas as it is, there is no real need for a 4 stroke kicker. That and since you usually carry around little kickers they should be light. With a 4 stroke since its sitting on the transom all the time, it could afford to be a little heavier. ?<br />Or is it that the tldi's weight savings and simple design mitigate the advantages of the larger 4 strokes?

There is no advantage to large 4-strokes. Direct Injection two-strokes are superior in every respect that counts. It's just not cost effective to make a small outboard in a Direct Injected model, hence the use of four-strokes. Keep in mind that 4-strokes and even DFI were FORCED on the public by the EPA and CARB. There was a reason that four-stroke technology was not pursued by the manufacturers up until they were forced to provide it to meet the guidelines.

A 115 TLDI is around $8500.00. Tohatsu makes a lot of models that you can not buy in the U.S. One of those is the 2-stroke 8. You might be able to find one up in Canada...but, your probably a year too late. You can still get one from the Caribbean distributer, Budget Marine. However, if you get caught by U.S. customs trying to bring in a new engine that does not have a EPA sticker....You will lose the engine, a lot of money and six months to 36 months of your time. It's almost worth it, but not quite. As an alternative, take a look at iboats's 60 day wonders, the Mercury campground engines. They are heavier, but at least they have guts.

Thanks for the update on the 115 TLDI's Elvin. I agree with you in all aspects- But, correct me if I am wrong....Honda has pursued 4 stroke technology since day one. I believe they did this long before the EPA began their crack down. I would agree that every other manufacturer pushed 4 strokes after the EPA came down on 2 strokes. I am still in mourning for Suzuki. Fantastic 2 strokes that had to be phased out....I loved their 2 strokes...

It's true that Honda has always offered their outboards in 4-stroke, but no one was buying them except for sailboat auxillary engines. We started selling them back in the early 90's and watched them develop larger hp engines. But, until the EPA started making waves, Honda did not begin selling anything larger than a 15 hp. They jumped on a good thing(for them) and rode it until the other manufacturers offered either 4-strokes or a working DFI. Unfortunately for Honda, they no longer offer a unique alternative to other outboards. They have also been nose diving for the last few years in sales. In fact, I can assure you, with 100% accuracy, that if the Fed's had found in favor of Mercury, that Honda Marine Corporation would have withdrawn from the U.S. market.
